Protecting Your Investment
You've invested in beautiful hardwood floors. Now here's how to keep them looking like the day they were finished. These tips apply whether your floors are brand new or freshly refinished.
1. Use the Right Cleaning Products
This is where most homeowners go wrong. Never use vinegar, Murphy's Oil Soap, or steam mops on polyurethane-finished hardwood. These products can dull the finish, leave residue, or force moisture into the wood.
Instead, use a pH-neutral hardwood floor cleaner. We recommend Bona Hardwood Floor Cleaner — spray lightly and dry mop. That's it.
2. Control Your Humidity
Connecticut's seasonal humidity swings are hardwood's biggest enemy. In summer, humidity can reach 80%+. In winter with the heat running, it can drop below 20%. This causes expansion, contraction, and eventually gaps between boards.
Keep your home between 35-55% relative humidity year-round. A whole-home humidifier in winter makes a massive difference.
3. Felt Pads on Everything
Every piece of furniture that touches your hardwood floor should have felt pads on the bottom. Replace them every 6-12 months as they collect grit that can scratch. This single habit prevents more damage than anything else on this list.
4. No Shoes, No Problem
Shoes — especially heels and hard-soled dress shoes — are the fastest way to dent and scratch hardwood. A no-shoes policy indoors dramatically extends the life of your finish. Keep a shoe rack by the door.
5. Recoat Before You Refinish
A maintenance recoat (screening and applying a fresh coat of polyurethane) every 5-7 years costs a fraction of a full refinish and keeps your floors protected. Think of it like waxing your car — it's preventive care that saves you from a much bigger job down the road.
When to Call a Professional
If you notice widespread scratching, dullness that cleaning won't fix, or any water damage, reach out before the problem gets worse. Early intervention is always cheaper than a full refinish.
